Many of you may have heard the sad news yesterday. Mount Vernon native and rap legend Dwight Arrington Myers (Heavy D) has passed away at the age of 44.
Heavy D was found unconscious at his Beverly Hills home around 11:25 a.m. Tuesday and was then rushed to the hospital where he later died. According to police, an investigation is ongoing into the cause of Heavy D’s death, but they say they do not suspect any foul play.
Celebs have been expressing their sadness on all media outlets. So many have been saying how sweet of man he was aside from being a legend in hip hop. Heavy D had so many hits. Peep one of my personal favorites below.
Today I came across teambackpack.net. TeamBackpack is a music website that follows the TeamBackpack movement (TBP). The hip-hop/lifestyle movement started in San Fransisco/ Bay Area, CA as as an online forum for music collaboration in 2010 but today is a powerhouse platform for up and coming artist from all over California.
If your familiar with GMPR, you know that I admire anything exposing indie artist. With regards to the TeamBackpack Movement, I took a special interest to their all female cyphers. I am a sucker for a GOOD female rapper. Wish rapping was a skill of mine but it’s not…sadly. Check out these 2 female cypher competitions.
You may be familiar with Elle Varner as a BET Music Matters Artist. The songbird and musical prodigy recently signed to MBK/J. Records and is already banging out hits. I admire her indie stuff and I’m pleased and excited to hear her major material.
Up first is a collaboration with fellow Music Matters Artist, J. Cole. “Only Wanna Give it to You” has a true R&B feel. It brings you back to the essence of why people fell in love with music in the first place. Varner is currently working on debut studio album which is stated to be out later this year.
With no leaks, the HIGHLY anticipated album is finally here. In honor of today’s Watch The Throne release, you can listen to the full album online thanks to Soul Culture and Grooveshark. The beats and production on this album are an extra special treat for your ears. I’m in love! I predict major sales but as always I am super excited to see the stats at the end of the week. Baltimore songstress and Jive Records newcomer, Wish debuts a video for her first single as a signed artist. Known for promoting self expression, “Feel Your Beat” is right on track. The song alone exuded a much needed sense of girl power but the video pushed the sassy lyrics over the top with a fun display of confidence, self love and female empowerment. Keep your ears to the streets. I have a feeling Wish is no remake and will give a new feel of music.
If you frequent GMPR, you may be familiar with the mystery R&B act, The Weekend. Known for its sexy tracks, The Weekend continues with the video release of “What You Need”. Heavily compared to a silent movie, this video adds to the mystery. No clues lead to the person behind the voice.
“What You Need” can be found on The Weekend’s mixtape, “House of Balloons”. “House of Balloons comes highly recommended by music critics. Don’t miss out. Download your copy at www.the-weekend.com
