The University of Illinois won the Victoria’s Secret Pink Nation Collegiate Showdown last spring and was granted the Fighting Illini Fest which took place last Thursday. Victoria’s Secret models Chanel Iman and Elsa Hosk hosted the free event, which included carnival-style games with Pink prizes, a pop-up store supplying limited edition Pink gear and music. Rap artist Kid Cudi performed along with musical act Girl Talk. Peep the official footage from PINK!
Today I came across teambackpack.net. TeamBackpack is a music website that follows the TeamBackpack movement (TBP). The hip-hop/lifestyle movement started in San Fransisco/ Bay Area, CA as as an online forum for music collaboration in 2010 but today is a powerhouse platform for up and coming artist from all over California.
If your familiar with GMPR, you know that I admire anything exposing indie artist. With regards to the TeamBackpack Movement, I took a special interest to their all female cyphers. I am a sucker for a GOOD female rapper. Wish rapping was a skill of mine but it’s not…sadly. Check out these 2 female cypher competitions.
Russell Simmons and Kanye West hit Occupy Wall Street to support the cause and its protesters. Although it’s picking up, the media isn’t producing any serious coverage on the protest. Yesterday, I saw a news story about the protestors using used pizza boxes to create protest signs. Really…is that what your really focusing on. Celebrities always bring publicity and that’s exactly what Russell and Yezzy’s visit did. Not sure why Kanye did not say a word and Russell did all the talking for him though.
Peep the Footage below.
A variety of celebrities partnered with The ONE Campaign for an attention grabbing PSA. In the PSA, celebrities throw around the F-word in an attempt to get others to join the fight against extreme poverty in East Africa. By the end of the video, the goal is for you to sign the petition on the ONE website. The petition is in support of ending Famine around the world. I signed the petition immediately after. I urge you to do the same.
Melanie Fiona releases a video for “4AM”, the first single off of her sophomore album titled The MF Life which will hit stores December 6th. The video, directed by Colin Tilley, is just as emotional, honest and powerful as all of her other videos. This video may portray a typical night for some women. Sad but true.
You may remember when GMPR posted Elle Varner‘s debut single, “Only Wanna Give It To You”. Well, now there is a visual to accompany the track.
The video features Billboard chart topper, J. Cole along side breakout star, Elle Varner. The video has a throwback feel with tons of fun colors and trendy fashion.
Look for Varner’s debut studio album sometime this fall.
Newcomer, Juliyaa has released her debut single “The Rhythm”. This fun up-tempo track truly displays who Juliyaa is as an artist and the singer/songwriter has her roots to thank for that.
The 23-year-old from North London grew up listening to her mother’s traditional Ghanaian gospel and hi life and her father’s classic vinyl collection of soul and reggae artist. Her sound today is an effortless fusion of African polyrhythms, harmonious soul vocals and high energy UK urban music.
Currently, UK artists are making it big in the States. Juliyaa is no different. her retro-sultry vibe is young and refreshing and I expect to hear more from her. Watch her video for “The Rhythm” below.
“The Rhythm” is available for download on iTunes. To hear other songs and learn more about Juliyaa visit her website.
